The three Renaissance humanists Niccolo Machiavelli Baldassare Castiglione and Leon Battista Alberti all believed that you should work hard to become the best individual you could be The main difference between them was how one should go about meeting this goal Alberti believes the individual should live his life with the highest moral standards He thought you should never compromise this It was all right to become wealthy if you accomplished this by being a good person This was learned behavior not inherited A child would have to be taught to behave this way while they were young He also believed you should always be trying to better yourself Castiglione thought that to achieve the ideal individual you would need to have good manners Unlike Alberti he thought morals were not as important as long as you maintained a good reputation Castiglione wanted his individual to be well rounded They should also be well spoken along with being athletic And no matter what you should always be a perfect gentleman Machiavelli in contrast to Alberti and Castiglione did not think you needed manners or morals He had the most corrupt ideas He thought that in order to be successful you would have to be feared He believed a nice guy would be taken advantage of He believed you should never be afraid to use the power you have over people to get what you want All three writers had similar goals for their ideal person They varied from one extreme to the other Albertis high moral beliefs to Machiavellis ruthlessness Castigliones beliefs wound up somewhere in the middle of the others
