In what ways was Maori society changed by arrival of sealers whalers and traders consider all aspects of society Which of the groups mentioned above had the biggest impact on Maori society and what was that impact Many things changed when the sealers whalers and traders introduced themselves to New Zealand It is impossible to know the exact reaction and change of the Maori people because of these three groups but we can assume that they had mixed feelings towards these white skinned foreigners Each group of people the whalers sealers or traders had its affect on the Maori people and its land Some more obvious than others but together their impact on New Zealand was enormous and their influence is a huge part of what we are today The biggest affect on New Zealand was the introduction of trade and barter As soon as trade was set up it forced the Maoris and Europeans to change their views towards one another so that the communication lines would stay open Toleratance of the cultures was minimal but it kept fighting wars and deaths lower than what possibly could have turned into a massacre The Maori and Europeans lived in a situation of interdependence on each other if nothing else Europeans brought two concepts that revolutionised trade in New Zealand First was actual system of trade Beforehand the Maori had based trading on a gift barter system which was highly inefficient If a chief wanted some good such as greenstone that another chief or tribe had he would hint that he wanted it then present him with a gift such as a cloak and he would receive the greenstone as a gift back The idea of trade for the Maoris was very free The second change in concept was the appearance of a middle man an agent usually Pakeha between the European ship captains and the Maori suppliers
