No love is greater than that of a father and his son In Tobias Wolffs Powder and The Liar one of the common themes throughout the story is the strong irrefutable relationship between father and son In Powder the boy is very different from his father however he still looks up to him and respects his way of living life Wolffs The Liar focuses on James the main character who lies because of his fathers death Throughout both stories Wolff demonstrates the importance of a father and how he can influence his sons life and self-identityIn the short story Powder there is an unquestionable relationship that is quite different from most In this father-son relationship we see a reflection of many modern day broken home situations The ordinary role of father and son has been reversed in this story Reversed in such a way that real life and many modern day family situations have been imitated The development of the father character begins with his sons flashback of being brought to a nightclub against the will of his mother With this passage it was perhaps Wolffs intent to render the father a reckless parent with no concern for the welfare of his childHowever in the fathers defense we are left with a negation that the father is only trying to introduce a basis of culture upon his son It becomes easy for the father not to hold back while with his sonHe does not have custody of the boy so he isnt inconvenienced with the role of authoritarianThus whenever he accepts the opportunity to spend time with his son he is able to have fun and not worry about the effects of his teachingsThe boy our narrator throughout the story becomes Wolffs antagonist to the father character Right through the story the boy expresses qualities of restraint and level headedness just like his motherAlmost everything that the father lacks in values the son has made
