Do Not Put Off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today In the short story Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason a lack of communication between Norma Jean and Leroy has devastating effects on their relationship The loss of Norma Jean and Leroys child was a distressing event in their lives but this event seemed to be pushed in the back of their minds as if nothing ever happened One would say that in a healthy relationship there would need to be a grieving period where the couple would be able to release their emotions through communication with one another In the case of Norma Jean and Leroy this grieving period would seem to have been ignored and in the end this lack of communication breaks this marriage apart Norma Jean learned to deal with the bays death without Leroy because Leroy was always on the road Since he has returned after the accident this couple has not dealt with how the babys death has affected their marriage It is possible they do not want to realize how disastrous their childs death has been to their marriage in fear of learning that there is no connection between them any longer Possibly Norma Jean found it easier to cope when Leroy was not around Now that Leroy has come home she may feel that she cannot deal with issues as well when Leroy is home because she is not used to it It is evident in this story that since the babys death Norma Jean and Leroy have not had the same relationship They find connections to each other in only the most insignificant ways For instance Bobbie Mason states When she explains to Leroy the three stages of complexion care involving creams toners and moisturizers he thinks happily of other petroleum products -axle grease diesel fuel This is a connection between him and Norma Jean731 This statement given by the author provides evidence that
