Beauty in things lies in the mind which contemplates them Hume Mirror describes an unnamed woman who sees a reflected image The woman hates what she sees but she is compelled to go back to the item reflecting her every day The anonymous character over analyzes her beauty every chance she gets in the characters mind she has little to no beauty The poem Mirror written in 1963 describes a personified mirror that is considered to be blunt and honest to all who is reflected The author of Mirror was a victim of suicide In her literature she uses literary elements that reveal her past and show a sense of her feeling of unworthiness through her charterers In the poem Mirror by Sylvia Plath Plaths depression and suicide is reflected in the underlying meaning of the poem Throughout Plaths life she had many hard times and struggles Plaths father died when she was a young girl this contributed to her ongoing struggles that she endured Plaths father died suddenly from diabetes mellitus in 1940 when she was only eight years old an experience that would have a significant impact on her poetry Ruby 116-117 Her poetry is said to exhibit a dark outlook on despair and anger containing startling imagery and multiple disturbing metaphors However she was a determined woman with her goals set in mind She wanted to have success in everything she did including socially and academically While attempting to achieve all the goals she had set in mind Plaths anxiety hit Electroshock therapy was considered a treatment but ironically it back fired increasing her anxiety leading to depression Plath hid herself in her basement of her home and attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills In July 1962 Plath learned about her husbands infidelities the failure of her marriage led to further struggles with severe depression and she committed suicide Ruby 117 Plath attempted suicide due to
