What is loves importance in literature Love has an immense impact and importance in literature This strong emotion defines characters relationships with family significant others and even God Love in literature also helps a reader become not only closer to the characters of a novel but also more involved and interested in the plot A reader can relate to situations of and pertaining to love because it is something that everyone knows and experiences on many different levels Love is a strong theme in many works of literature that have been studied this year in semester one such as Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter Sarah Pierrepont by Jonathan Edwards and To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter is a novel of the Puritanical society sin and a belief in God but most importantly one of love The main character Hester Prynne faces situations in which love is very much present Her relationship with her secret lover the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale and her love for their daughter Pearl show how full of love Hester truly is In this novel love places its characters in states of guilt secrecy sorrow controversy and even happiness In reading this novel a reader is able to feel compassion for the characters because as a human being one experiences love on a daily basis Romantic love is mutual between Hester and Dimmesdale The love of a parent child relationship is also displayed in this novel between Hester and Pearl and eventually between Pearl and Dimmesdale Another type of love portrayed in this novel is a love for God Hester and the Reverend Dimmesdale both display a fairly strong love for God through out all their trials and tribulations along with the majority of the Puritan society Pearl is raised knowing her Heavenly Father as her only father and seems to understand this concept with much ease for a child of her young age
