Alcohol is abused heavily by teenagers across the nation As they grow older their alcoholism grows worse and worse Statistics show that the majority of teens have had at least one drink But for some it doesnt stop at just one Alcohol is the most widely used and abused drug among youth It kills more teenagers than all drugs combined Seven million children under 18 live in alcoholic homes and between one-fourth and one-third of them will become an alcoholic themselves The estimated average age to start drinking alcohol is 13 For some its much younger In a survey of 4th and 6th graders one-third of the 4th graders and one-half of the 6th graders that had been questioned said that they had been pressured by their own peers to have taken a drink at one time 90 of kids who get in trouble say they did it to impress or please their friends In 1998 104 million drinkers were under the legal age of 21 Also in 1998 an estimated one in five teenagers were current drinkers and one in thirteen teenagers were binge drinkers 38 of girls ages 12-17 reported using alcohol In a survey of 4390 high school seniors and dropouts said that 80 reported getting drunk binge drinking or drinking and driving in the preceding year Advertising has a somewhat impression on the teens 56 of people in grades 5-12 said advertising encourages them to drink In SAMHSAs National Household Survey of ages 12-17 the results showed that 72 million teens drank at least once last year 27 million drank once a month and 1 million reported drinking once a week In another National Survey showed that as teens grow older more of them drink 8th graders reported that 25 had drank within the past month 8 said that they have been drunk and 1 said they drank everyday 10th graders reported that 40 had drank within the past month 22
