Today prayer in school is a very controversial topic in our society There is organized prayer that must be led by a teacher or authority figure and quiet time that should be set-aside for children to reflect pray or meditate Some people think that an organized prayer would help with violence drug abuse and social problems that are in our schools today Having a minute of silent time every day came about after September 11th to give children a chance to reflect either on our nation or other things The problem with organized prayer is that there are so many religions that it would be very likely that a student would be left out A minute of quiet time would be the better thing to do because the school would not be intruding on the religious freedoms of the students The Religious freedom Amendment introduced by Representative Earnest Istook in 1998 and 1999 would have amended the Constitution to give students the right to pray on public property including schools which would cause a lot of problems with different faiths Whose faith should be chosen over another Who should lead the prayers In October of 2001 after the terrorist attacks of September11 Representative Walter B Jones introduced a resolution to Congress that public schools should set aside a sufficient period of time to allow children to pray for or quietly reflect on behalf of the Nation during this time of struggle against the forces of international terrorismOhio has put into writing that the public schools in that state allows one minute for students each day to reflect meditate or pray The bill becomes law in July The sponsor of Ohios bill were confused because they didnt know that they were allowed to take the time to pray even though our elected leaders prayed publicly after September 11 Its kind of sending a double standard message said Rep Rex Damschroder a Republican Every student across the
