Legalization of Same-sex Marriages The issue regarding the legalization of same-sex marriages is now a major political issue Some see homosexuality as being sinful and disgusting while other know that it is just another way of living When it comes down to it our society is making it illegal for people that live their lives differently from the majority of us It is unfair for our government to decide on whether or not homosexuals can marry Why should certain people receive more benefits and acceptance because of their sexuality Show Slide 3 Legalizing same-sex marriages is just another hurtle we must jump over to become a completely accepting society Marriage in North America has evolved in many different ways over the past 16 decades It wasnt until 1890 that polygamous marriages became illegal but many still exist today In the 19th century Afro-Americans were not free to marry at all but after the civil war they were able to marry but only to the same race Until a few decades ago inter-racial marriages were considered a criminal act In 1967 it became legal for people of different races to marry These three changes in our society were painful experiences for many at the time Many believe that the institution of marriage and the family as forming the basic foundation of society Any attempt to change the structure of marriage or the eligibility of people to marry can destabilize our country But looking back we were able to adapt to these three major changes and there has been no long-term harm If these marital changes have now been accepted by society then we should be able to accept same-sex marriages as well Show Slide 4 As of November 19 2003 the current status of same-sex marriages and civil unions in the US are the following Purple is a state with court ruling striking down ban on same-sex marriages Massachusetts Blue which is most
