proprietor then goes to the hospital where he learns from the porter that Catherine has left for Stresa He goes to visit Simmons a singing student he knows and asks him about the procedure for getting into Switzerland Simmons gives him civilian clothes and he travels to Stresa There he goes to a bar called the Isles Borromees and asks if the bartender has seen any English girls He has and says there are two English nurses staying at a little hotel near the train station Henry goes to the hotel finds Catherine and Helen Ferguson having supper and enjoys a joyful reunion with Catherine Helen becomes angry when she sees Henry she accuses him of seducing Catherine attacks Catherine for having no honor and finally begins to cry Henry describes the night with Catherine saying that they slept when they were tired but spent much time awake together He says that they never felt as though they wanted to be alone when together together they felt alone against the world Henry thinks that the world kills very courageous kind gentle people early because it cannot break them In the morning Henry tells Catherine that they should go to Switzerland He says he is sick of living like a criminal and though she supports his plan to go to Switzerland she tells him to be sensible Later that morning Catherine goes to see Helen Ferguson and Henry goes fishing with the bartender at his hotel The barman offers to let Henry use the boat whenever he wants it--Switzerland is just across the lake Henry and Catherine eat lunch with Helen Ferguson and Count Greffi a 94-year-old nobleman Henry befriended on an earlier trip to Stresa That evening Henry plays billiards with the count That night a storm comes and the barman wakes Henry to tell him that the military police will arrest him in the morning The barman helps
