Eric Arthur Blair later to be known as George Orwell was not like the typical author He struggled in his life with many obstacles and mainly wrote about his experiences and views His works reflect his understandings of what was going on during his time period and the observations that he encountered were converted into novels The life he lived was one which contained many hardships struggles and a life that was rough However his career was not obstructed by these complications and went on to become a well-known author George Orwell was born on June 25 1903 in Motihari India His father Richard was an agent in the Opium Department of the Indian Civil Service His mother Ida was 18 years younger than her husband and Orwell also had a sister named Marjorie Orwell described them as lower upper middle class His family owned no property and had no extensive investments Like many middle-class English families of the time they were completely dependent on the British Empire for their income and future In 1907 they returned to England and lived in Henley when Orwell was about eight Orwell was then sent to St Cyprians preparatory school in Sussex At the age of thirteen he won a scholarship to Wellington and soon another to Eton which was a famous public school He finished the final examinations at Eton 138th out of 167 Instead of winning a university scholarship Orwell joined the Indian Imperial Police in 1922 Orwell was not doing what his fellow classmates were doing because Eton regularly led to either Cambridge or Oxford University He served the police force in Burma for five years In 1927 Orwell resigned from the force He did this because he wanted to pursue writing and because he was supporting a political system that he no longer believed in Orwell also taught himself how to write at the age of 24 In the spring of 1928 he
