He felt a raindrop on his head Damn It had been thirteen hours sincehis last ride had dropped him off at that little cold Mobil in CortlandOhio and all hed done since was walk toward the Pennsylvania borderwith his arm out and thumb up like a hopeless fool He was hungry histhroat itched and his arm was burning from being held up for so longWith nothing else to do he shrugged off the drawstring bag he carriedon his back and planted himself amidst the mottled grass ignoring thecricks and cracks his fifty-eight-year-old body made along the way Helooked at his thumb At the deep canyons age had formed on his sun-curedskin At all the places it had taken him He wheezed out a hollow sighNobody stops anymore he thought Well hardly anybody A lot of thingshad changed since the 60s when he would play tricks on girls stay uplate and hitchhike his way from coast to coast Before life hadsmoothed and bent the sharp edges of his personality No now he waslucky for any car to give him a ride People cared less now he figuredThat was it Hardly anybody would take a few moments of their precioustime to give a gray-haired man a lift It was useless sentimentalitybut it pleased him still to rant- even if it was only to himself He checked his black plastic watch squinting to make out the timethrough the countless scratches on its face His sister gave him thatwatch for his birthday some time ago Molly That was why he was out onthis damn trip in the first place To go to his little sisters goddamnfuneral He could almost imagine the scene in his mind Molly drivinghome from work lowering her eyes to flip channels on the radio Thetraffic light changing The storm of hot steel and screeching brakesthat followed He thought about all the opportunities he had to visither How they needed him on the farm during her
