The Crucible by Arthur Miller has a concrete historical meaning and universal theme One of the main themes that are portrayed in this play is the love triangle which is between Proctor Abigail and Elizabeth Another theme is mass hysteria which pertains to the chaos that broke out among the people of Salem The judicial system is also a theme because their system of judging innocent from guilty is completely different from today This play displays many themes and messages that are still present today and it shows the evolution of the court and how the system has changed over the decades The first theme of the play is that of the love triangle which consists of Abigail John and Elizabeth The historical meaning of the play is that Puritans must remain faithful to their partner or else there will be devastating consequences John Proctor broke his marriage vows and cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail Eventually Elizabeth discovers that he had broken his vows to her and Abigail begins to conjure a plan to get Proctor back In the end Proctor is hung Elizabeth is pregnant and heartbroken and Abigail fled their community Today our societys morals can be directly linked with the morals of the Puritans Both of these groups of people believe that fidelity is one of the largest factors in keeping a marriage intact and is essential to having a loving stable relationship The second theme of this play consists of mass hysteria Mass hysteria is when a group of people all develop a common fear that often turns into massive panic This occurred when a group of girls headed by Abigail began to condemn people as being witches The Salem Witch Trials was the mark that mass hysteria was taking place because it showed that the fear of witches was so high that a court was needed to judge whether or not the person was innocent These girls and other town
