Adolescence Summary Adolescents are no longer considered children They cant reason like an adult but no longer have the mentality of a child They are individuals on their way to becoming adults but do require a lot of help and guidance from their parents Adolescence is a hard time for both teens and parents Teenagers have a negative public image and parents often fear their childs adolescent years and see it as a crisis During this time tension between teens and parents is normal as a result there are many conflicts in the home Most conflicts within the home occur with younger teens that attempt to question authority The largest source of these problems is arguments over time management As children become older they spend less and less time with their parents Teenagers distance themselves from parents and turn to friends Approval of pears becomes more important than approval of parents Peers and social activities become more important than family Adolescents also face new and unknown influences like gangs guns and drugs and problems of depression substance abuse and delinquency which are continually rising One of the new and most often feared topics that arise from adolescence is sex Parent is very reluctant to talk to their teens about sex A teens sexuality can distort their parents behavior There is often a struggle between what parents say and what textbooks say A textbook says a person reaches their sexual peak during the teen years while parents say they are not mentally ready Teens can easily figure out the mechanics of sex but require an adult to teach them about the love and relationship aspect of sex When a parents first-born enters adolescence marital satisfaction hits an all-time low and mid-life crisis are triggered because the couple spends less time with each other Single parents dont spend less time with their children but often burn out quicker When a
