The four largest moons of Jupiter were first discovered in 1609 by an Italian astronomer named Galileo Galilei A German astronomer Simon Marius claims to have seen them first and ended up naming them in 1614 Io Europa Ganymede and Callisto All of these were named after Greek Gods or Goddesses Io is the third largest moon that orbits Jupiter and fourth largest in the solar system just a little bit larger than the earths moon Io is one of the most exotic places in the solar system It has over 400 active volcanoes Its mountains reach heights of 16 kilometers 52000 feet which is much taller than the mountains on Earth Its colored with yellows and reds because of all the lava from the hundreds of volcanoes People often think of it as a large pizza because of its colors Io is the only body in the solar system besides earth that is known to have active volcanoes Although there are hundreds of volcanoes erupting and spewing sulfur hundreds of miles into space The surface is very young and is always changing Astronomers first thought Io was mainly rocky with little iron but recent discoveries found that Io really has an enormous iron core Io is 114296 km in circumference This is about one-third of the size of earth There is an estimation that one ton of material has to be ejected into Ios atmosphere every second in order to replenish the gases that escaped from its atmosphere It takes 42 hours 27minutes and 335 seconds for Io to orbit Jupiter If a person would go to visit Io they would be burned by the lava that covers the surface The atmosphere of Io is very thin and does not remain bound to Io for very long Because of the volcanoes the air is primarily made up of sulfur Io is 45 billion years old about the same age as Jupiter When it orbits
