What would cause a friend to commit murder What would cause a man to take his own life In Shakespeares play Julius Caesar the tragic character Marcus Brutus does commit murder and then takes his own life And in Platos Trial and Death of Socrates Socrates takes his own life after his trial But for what purpose After examining the facts the reality behind the two mens actions can be revealed Marcus Brutus a servant and a close friend to Caesar had a strong relationship with Caesar but a stronger one lay within his heart his relationship with Rome and its people Brutus had an extremely close relationship with Caesar and that didnt just happen over night but one that was over a period of time Brutus held a friendship with Caesar which was his way into the palace In Roman times the only way for someone to get close to a person with high rank is if heshe is close or friends with himher In many points of the play Brutus is talking to and standing next to Caesar This shows his relationship to Caesar Brutus also loves Caesar but fears his power In early acts of the play Brutus says to Cassius What means this shouting I do fear the people do choose Caesar for their kingyet I love him well Act 1 Scene 2 Lns 85-89 as he is speaking to Cassius Brutus loves Caesar but would not allow him to climber-upwardHe then unto the ladder turns his backAct 2 Scene1 Lns 2426 As the quote says Brutus would not allow Caesar to rise to power and then turn his back on the people of Rome Grocki2 Then after Caesars death Brutus speaks to Antony about the assassination of Julius Caesar Brutus says that either he or Antony cannot see their hearts which are full of pity for being a part of the conspiracy to murder Brutus friend Caesar
