The relationship between vaccinations for measles mumps and rubella MMR and autism has been debated among different scientists for decades It has also been a controversial belief among citizens Some scientists against vaccinations believing that receiving vaccines will damage childrens mental development and lead to autism due to the Thimerosal contained in the vaccine which is not true On the other hand the scientists supporting vaccinations believe the cause of autism has nothing to do with vaccines after repeated investigations in recent years Both opinions on this matter have a great impact on citizens on many significant levels Most citizens believe that vaccines containing Thimerosal is the cause to autism regardless of numerous study they show this not to be the case This is because they cannot accept the truth so they continue to defend what they believed and deny the substantial evidence This paper will explain how and why people still believe that Vaccinations cause autismIn the article Vaccines and the Great Denial Specter shows many parents were frightened due to the rate autism has increased and based on the evidence what they have seen which children developed autism not long after receiving After a report proved that vaccinations are not the cause of autism most parents were not believe that is not the case because this is too hard for them not to believe This reaction can be explained by Monica Prasad et al motivated reasoning when people face new information that contradict their preexisting beliefs they sometimes process and respond defensively then seek information to support what they already believed while ignoring or arguing with opposing information 1 In other words people seek other information to support what they believed even if the new information is the truth Thus the former information that many parents believed has already entrenched in itself in their mind so no matter what new evidences comes out they would used any possible reason to argue or defend
