In American English, you should default to using double quotation marks only; of course, single quotation marks are used when you're nesting quotes within quotes. You should also take care not to use abbreviations such as MTF without defining them first since your reader may not be familiar with the term the abbreviation stands for. Finally, standard practice is to only introduce and use an abbreviation if it's going to appear at least three times in your work."
