In Shirley Jacksons The Lottery we are told of a small village that commits a yearly random murder every year as part of a long tradition The village is victim to its own nature of blindly following tradition Jackson writes Mr Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box If the villagers cant even replace their black box it is obvious that the village has long since had this tradition and people are afraid to change in even the slightest way When the simple act of thinking about what they were doing could make them question their behavior they refuse to doubt their tradition They have this tradition too deeply ingrained in their minds to question it This distinctly human trait of following tradition even when the consequences are harmful to others There are numerous examples in human history For example slavery in second and third generation slave-owning families is an example of tradition Many slave owners treated their slaves horribly yet managed to convince themselves that slaves were sub-human and this became a family tradition The only way to avoid being sucked into an infinite loop of tradition is to always question what youre told and always stand up for what you believe in
