The movie Real Women Have Curves explores the story of Ana an American-Mexican teenager struggling to balance her culture and her dreams of a college educationThe film version of Real Women Have Curves directed by Patricia Cardoso is true to Josefina Lopezs themes in her play of the same name They both demonstrate how women and immigrants are oppressed by cultures that do not support their place as active members in society Lopez and Cardoso intend to give insight into immigrants seeking equal privileges in their lives The movie and play illustrate a few ideas that present hurdles for Mexican immigrants In one scene of the play Ana says to come work here for 67 dollars a week 1833 and I dont work fast enough for her to pay me minimum wage 1833 showing her aggravation at doing work that is normally done by undocumented workers In one scene the women in Estellas factory duck as a white van drives by a reaction caused from not maintaining proper citizenship for many years In the movie Ana exclaims We make them for 18 they sell them for 600 referring to the dresses they make in her sisters factory In this scene Ana realizes her sister is being taken advantage of In another scene Ana brings her sisters naivety to light saying Youre all cheap labor for Bloomingdales Estelas hardships are seen in the play as she states Theyre going to repossess everythingAnd if I appear in court theyll find out that I dont have any papers worried about both the loss of her business and her immigration status Lopezs play based on a modernized society tries to liberate women and encourage them to keep fighting for their rightsLopez cries out loudly against social roles and traditional cultural roles that marginalize women through her play Through the main character Ana the play writer protests against womens oppression and demands full social equality between men and women In
