In todays society beauty can be defined and perceived in manydifferent ways For example we look at appearances for the physicalbeauties as well as our experiences and conquered obstacles for thebeauty within ourselves Beauty can also be defined by the people we areassociated with For instance as children we look to our parents andfamily to give us our perception of what is beautiful as teenager wemay seek our perceptions from our peers leaving us searching for ourown meaning of beauty as adults In Alice Walkers essay Beauty Whenthe Other Dancer is the Self Walker describes her childhood and thestruggle throughout her life all while illustrating her transition fromseemingly losing her physical external beauty to finding the beautywithin herself The beginning of the essay starts with Walkers early childhood As achild she presents herself as conceded knowing that she is beautifuland unashamed of letting the people around her known of this fact Forexample Walker as a child states Daddy take me Im theprettiest Walker 95 Another example of Walkers not so modestbehavior is her analysis of her audience while giving her Easterspeech This is before the the word beautiful exists in peoplesvocabulary but Oh isnt she the cutest thing frequently floats myway Walker 96 As Walker writes about her childhood the tone of herwriting increasingly changes to disgust and shamefulness Walkers transition from this self coincided child begins after hertragic accident when her brother shoots her in the eye with a BB gunThis causes her to become blind in one eyes as well as causing scaretissue the glob Walker 98 to form in her eye making for anundesirable appearance Walker becomes the girl who doesnt raise herhead Walker 97 becoming a shadow of the little girl she once wasAs a child Walker sought her perception of beauty from her familyHowever after her accident she begins to define beauty through theeyes of her peers Whats matter with her eyethey ask criticallyWalker 97 As Walker grows
