Andrew Jacksons three major goals as president were the security of our National Bank Indians and Slavery As president Jackson worked to take away the federal charter of the Second Bank of the United States it would continue to exist as a state bank The second Bank had been authorized during James Madisons term in 1816 for a 20 year period Jackson opposed the national bank concept on moral grounds In Jacksons veto message the bank needed to be abolished because He thought it was unconstitutional because he was a strict ConstitutionalistJacksons presidency agreed with the formation of state and national antislavery societies and the expansion of enemy efforts to awaken the nations principles Although protesters focused primarily on nonpolitical tactics their activities inevitably interfered into politics The Cherokee Nation that had once fought young Andrew Jackson back in 1788 now faced an even more authoritative and determined man who was committed on taking their land They were not called a civilized nation for nothing Many of their leaders were well educated many more could read and write they had their own written language thanks to Sequoyah a constitution schools and their own newspaper And they had adopted many skills of the white man to improve their living conditions They intended to fight their removal and they figured they had many ways to do it As a last resort they planned to bring suit before the Supreme Court Thomas Jefferson and his followers assumed control of the national government in 1801 as the champions of a distinctive vision of America They envisioned a society of sturdy independent farmers happily free from the workshops the industrial towns and the city mobs of Europe They favored a system of universal education that would introduce all Americans to the scientific rationalism of the Enlightenment They promoted a cultural outlook that emphasized localism and republican simplicity And above all they proposed a federal government of sharply limited power with
