As the bomb fell over Hiroshima and exploded we saw the entire city disappear I wrote in my log the words My God what have we done Captain Robert Lewis the co-pilot of the Enola Gay quoted about the incident in August 6 1945 On the date the United States of America used a massive atomic weapon against Hiroshima Japan This atomic bomb the equivalent of 20000 TNT flattened the city killing tens of thousands of civilians Before the tragic event however the United States of America had faced the severe controversy containing the ethical legal and military factors over the usage of the inhumane weapon of massive destruction A lot of opinions were made not only in the government but also over American media Some debaters focused on the presidential decision making process but the others on whether or not the bombings were the proximate cause of Japanese surrender Some of scholars questioned if atomic bomb would have a military effect because they were aware of Soviet Union they were aware of the fact that Japan would not surrender even after the bombing but negotiate with the United States to win more lenient terms by mediating Soviet UnionIn the summer of 1945 Japans leaders had two strategies for negotiating an end to World War II to convince the Soviets neutrals at the time to mediate or to fight one last decisive battle that would inflict so many casualties that the United States would agree to more lenient terms Both plans could still have succeeded after the bombing of Hiroshima neither plan was possible once the Soviets invade From the Japanese perspective the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and other Japanese-held territory was the event that dramatically changed the strategic landscape and left Japan with no option but to surrender unconditionally The Hiroshima bombing was simply an extension of an already fierce bombing campaign Wilson 163-164 Despite the prediction of scholars public opinion narrowed down
