The purpose of Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842 was to settle various outstanding questions between Great Britain and the United States With the exception of the Oregon line most of the frontier between Canada and the United States was defined by this agreement Anonymous 1992 Principally the treaty settled the boundary disputes in the Northeastern United States and also resulted in many other significant accomplishments The successful results and improved relations in the aftermath of the treaty was clearly a watershed in the United States Rapprochement with Great Britain Since the end of the American Revolution and the War of 1812 many problems remained unresolved and animosity perpetuated distrust on both sides of the Atlantic Journalistic mudslinging and pointed insults were hurled at virtually every opportunity Ferrell 1969 Webster and his adversary had hoped to include the Oregon question in their broad agenda but the return of the exploring expedition prevented its solution Merli Wilson 1974 p 148 Another troublesome issue was the Aroostook War Quarrels developed over an unpopulated area of northern Maine where the adjacent boundary lies with New Brunswick The precise boundary line between Maine and New Brunswick remained a matter of often-heated argument for years after the close of the Revolutionary War Anonymous 1997 This would remain a war of imprecation rather the blood however Perkins 1993 The dispute continued and fueled itself until 1839 when it threatened to erupt into open warfare Anonymous 1997 Impressment had also long been a great concern for the US All too often the British Navys practice of apprehending their former citizens to return to her majesty service infuriated the Americans Many of these former Brits had become US citizens by virtue of their longevity in the US This however meant nothing to England their policy was once a Brit always a Brit The impressment issue was by many accounts one of the primary reasons for the War of 1812 Jones 1996
