What are the problems the Asylum Seekers have in their own country There are many countries especially among developing countries in Asia Africa and Latin America where ordinary people have no say in whatever the governments do There are problems of political repression Even under so-called democratic countries if one criticizes the government politicians their policies the general tendency is to persecute them This persecution process includes arrest indefinite detention torture and death at the hands of para-military groups and so on There are also many countries in the world where there are conflicts due to ethnic religious and linguistic rivalries People from non-majority backgrounds are continuously and regularly discriminated against Then there are autocratic regimes like Taliban which impose no education or employment for women no religious practices other than their own sectarian Islamic versions and so on The ordinary people who suffer as a result of these conflicts discriminations and wars are many millions It is mainly these people who flee their own countries to find safety and freedom in other countries like Australia in which they hope to have a far better future Why for example Afghans were leaving their homeland to seek protection in another By end of 1980s roughly one million Afghans had perished from a pre-war population of just over 13 million and a great deal of the countrys infrastructure was wrecked due to different wars that occurred in Afghanistan prior to the establishment of the Taliban regime The schools system was in a state of disarray and much productive land was contaminated by anti-personnel land mines Millions of Afghans remained as refugees outside their country from which they had been driven by the ferocity of the war which was fought on Afghanistans soil In exile a new generation of Afghans had grown up who had never set foot in their homeland and who critically lacked the skills which would normally have been learned in
