THE UNIFICATION OF ITALY The unification of Italy was a difficult and timely process involving both Italians and foreign powers Both sides had their significance but in my personal opinion Italy created herself Foreign aid although important was not as crucial for unification It was the actual Italians themselves who planted the seed of independence It was them who actually manipulated foreign powers into helping them Outside powers provided the opportunities but it was the Italians who took advantage of the opportunities and made the actual changes Perhaps the most important person concerned with the unification of Italy was Giuseppe Mazzini 1805-1872 He was responsible for initiating the liberal movement and planting the seed of independence Mazzini founded the Society of Young Italy which taught that Italy should be free independent and under a republican government situated in Rome Mazzini and his followers spread his gospel of Italian Nationalism throughout all of Italy and evoked independent thoughts into the minds of all Italians The possibility of overthrowing foreign rule began to rise as Mazzini extended his teachings to every corner of Italy Cavour was the main intelligence behind the unification of Italy He was an educated aristocrat who believed that Italy should be independent and free from foreign rule He had an important role in uniting Italy He continued Mazzinis work which was spreading the idea of Italian Nationalism He did this through his paper Il Resorgimento The Resurrection He ascended to the position of respected prime minister of Piedmont from where he could use his political influence and power to help Italy unite Cavour made some vital steps towards unification He stripped the church of its power he understood that foreign aid was necessary for unification so he devised some plans to achieve that help He sent troops to the Crimean war 1854-56 in hope that he would get some help in fighting against Austria in return for
