Q1 The Process of In Vitro Fertilization The term In Vitro Fertilisation refers to the process in which the fertilization of an egg by a sperm takes place in a test tube as opposed to the mothers fallopian tube There are six major steps involved in Vitro Fertilization process Before a couple can pursue this way of fertilization they must review any past medical and infertility history 1 Stimulating Egg Development The mother begins by taking fertility medications to encourage the development of eggs within the ovaries These medications stimulate several follicles to produce more than one egg so that there is a higher chance of fertilization As soon as the several eggs have developed an additional medication must be taken to assist in the maturation of the eggs Once the eggs have matured the mother continues to the second phase commonly known as Egg Retrieval 2 Egg Retrieval After at least three follicles have reached more than 17mm in size on the ultrasound a minor surgical procedure is needed to remove the eggs from the mother It takes approximately an hour to complete and requires general anesthesia A vaginal ultrasound probe also used for follicle monitoring is inserted into the vagina to the follicles of the ovary From there the eggs and follicle fluid are aspirated into a test tube and sent to a laboratory to examine the fluid for eggs 3 Sperm Collection Shortly after the egg retrieval the father is asked to provide a sperm sample through masturbation or in some cases through Epididymal Sperm Aspiration or Testicular Sperm Aspiration Men who have poor fertility rates will have their sperm injected into the eggs using ISI Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection 4 In Vitro Fertilisation While the retrieved eggs are placed into a monitored Petri dish the semen sample that was collected must undergo a process referred to as washing where the healthiest sperm are isolated Once the sperm
