Public opinion pollsters routinely ask questions about whether people think the country is headed in the right direction or is on the wrong track If you were asked such a question about Great Britain what would your answer be Why did you reach that conclusion I believe that Great Britain is headed in the right direction but work needs to be done Britain has had the most troubles of any of the major liberal democracies since the height of the collectivist period in the early 1960s From looking at charts in the book you can see that Britain has had a decrease in its economic standing in the second half of the twentieth century What stands out to me is in 1939 it was the second wealthiest country in the world only behind the United States In 2000 it ranked fourteenth The problem is that all of the other countries in competition with Britain have surpassed it It fell behind in the 1970s and ever since then has been on a gradual decline People can see this easily when they visit Britain and then visit France or Germany and see a higher standard of living Britain is not a poor country though by no means Its per capita gross national product is over 22000 a year Even though Britain faces many problems it still is a very popular place throughout the world Its the size of California and over 60 million people live there Tourists visit all the time and enjoy the sights and sounds of the culture I think even though theres many problems the country is still going in the right direction
