Writing Project 2 Response in Parts to Drinking in the Sixties From Gary Sotos New and Selected Poems Part 1 Lines 1-13 The speaker thinks that drinking make you popular and makes friends if you laugh while drinking The speaker notices the smallest things his teachers do that makes them look drunk It seems as if drinking was a big thing to him hoping it would make him popular Hes sees the teachers drunk and the Cheerleaders there important and popular and they looked like they were drunk so if he drank and got drunk maybe he could be popular too Part 2 Lines 14-26 Here it makes me think that the speaker and his friend are not very popular they are at an abandoned house with a quart of beer and its just them no one else They would yell out the window at people walking by like they were scared someone would find out that there drinking alone They talk about the oddest thinks that you usually dont talk about The house is torn apart and a total mess But they go there anyway just to drink Part 3 Lines 27-37 The speaker and his friend talk are still drinking and talking about nothing They are still yelling out the window at people They seem to not be having that much fun his friend is bending a wire hanger into funny shapes The speaker is hitting the wall with a board and kicking old moldy oranges around Part 4 Lines 38-46 They are still making a mess of the already messed up house pulling things off the wall kicking kitchen appliances and cutting up the couch It seems as if there do all they can to be popular The jocks mess up the house and there popular so maybe if they mess it up they could be popular also The speaker and is friend
