It is Christmas Eve and Scrooge is overseeing the business He is accompanied by his employer Bob Cratchit who is in charge of writing out records and accounts Scrooge then receives several visitors One of these visitors is Scrooges nephew Fred who invites Scrooge to dine with him for Christmas but Scrooge refuses Then two gentlemen come in who are collecting money for charity but again Scrooge refuses to give the gentlemen anything saying he helps the poor already through supporting prisons and workhouses After the men had left Bob asks Scrooge to take Christmas off Scrooge allows Bob to have Christmas Day as a holiday but insists that he should be back at work earlier the next day When Scrooge returns to his home he is visited by the Ghost of Jacob Marley who is weighed down by a massive chain made up of cashboxes keys and padlocks The ghost says that any spirit who does not mingle with other people in life must travel among them after death Marley tells Scrooge that he too wears a chain larger than his Marley had often sat by him unseen Now he warns him of three more spirits which will visit to help Scrooge change his ways These three spirits show Scrooge the past present and future of what was is and will be the Industrial Revolution Scrooges past is revealed by the Ghost of Christmas Past The ghost has a strange changing form and gives out a bright light With the ghost leading the way Scrooge revisits the scenes of his earlier life He sees himself as a boy at school on two occasions First the ghost takes him where as a boy he sat alone in a cold schoolroom Later Scrooge sees himself with his older sister Fran who has come to bring him home for the holidays Fran tells Scrooge as a young boy that father has become a much kinder person than
