While we can agree that any kind of violence on campus is a big issue it may be difficult to determine just how big that issue has become For example if you were the employer at a huge company looking at resumes for potential candidates it would be nice to know their history of employment to determine whether you would want to hire them or not You might also want to call their employer to find out what kind of person they were Therefore to gain a better understanding of campus violence we must turn to past experiences and look at the issue in a historical sense So has campus violence increased or decreased from previous years The Department of Education FBI and US Secret Service seem to think so A study was published in 2010 by these three agencies titled Campus Attacks Targeted Violence Affecting Institutions of Higher Education Robin McGuire from Nature Education reported the results The study commissioned in response to the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech analyzes 272 violent incidents from 1909 through 2008 finding that 75 percent of them have happened since 1980 So think of it like this in the last century over half of these violent acts have happened in the last twenty years or so This certainly indicates that campus violence has increased since previous decades There are no definitive answers as to why it is increasing but with numbers like these the issue is hard to ignore
