On August 1914 when World War I arose in Europe most Americans had little to no interest in being a part of what they considered to be a European war That changed when German submarines attacked civilian vessels that cost the lives of many Americans on April 6 1917 which led Congress to declare war At this time many White and Black American citizens headed to war and the ones left behind worked to fill the empty factory slots Although many African Americans believed that entering the War would make them seem worthy in their White counterparts eyes the opposite happened The contributions African Americans made during the War went unrecognized and were resented in America which led me to wonder did African Americans come out of World War I with any significant accomplishments And if so were they the ones that they were hoping forSome people think that at the start of World War I many African Americans saw joining the military as a great opportunity to improve their social and economic status in America and to gain the respect they eagerly wanted from their White counterparts But many believe that this goal failed when a large amount of African Americans signed up to serve in the military but only a few were accepted Things became worse once it was made clear that African Americans could not serve in the Marines and that the positions that they would acquire within the Navy and the Coast Guard would be limited and low status By the end of World War I African Americans served in the cavalry infantry signal medical engineer and artillery units as well as serving as chaplains surveyors truck drivers chemists and intelligence officers Bryan Discrimination was still on the rise and they still were not treated equally Others saw progress for Black people during the War as an illusion During the War Black divisions were created specifically for African
