Creativity is a hot topic today whether in the context of Business Technology or the Arts And while there are many aspects to creativity there is certainly one we admire most in creative people Being creative is seeing the same thing as everybody else but thinking of something different Cave para 1 In striving to define what is the essence of creativity we are faced with the many areas in which we see creative expression Sometimes we look at an artist that has made something spectacular out of industrial rubbish and we think that is the definition of creativity Other times we look at a painting by a renaissance master for example the way in which Michelangelo was able to paint the scenes on the curved ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and keep them in the proper perspective and say that is true creativity In my experience it is both but I think the emphasis is on the former Creativity is not so much making something new as it is recombining the old People often talk about creativity in terms of artistic expression and while this is an important manifestation of creativity it is not the whole pictureFor me the definition of creativity is complex Creativity is of the essence I would say that over and over during my days as a Chef It was a play on the phrase the essence of creativity The thing is I didnt know exactly what I was saying I would often exclaim this refrain after I had come up with some exciting new dish The truth is often my creations were not necessarily new but rather old things with a twist One of my desserts was simply a variation on an old theme Blue veined cheese with ripe pears and Port wine I was often called creative-- was I If so then what is it that defined what I was I was surrounded by master Chefs who
