We have all causally thought about having an immense amount of money but never did we think of the effect it would have on our mind body and soul The Pearl is about how Kino a poor diver encounters a valuable pearl that brings him desolation The theme of The Pearl is how money can modify a person This theme is developed through symbolism plot and characterization Symbolism can support the theme by showing how Kino changes characterization can support the theme of the story by displaying why the pearl makes Kino greedy and the plot supports the theme on account of Kino changing into a furious person Symbolism is most readily used to show change For example the following quote symbolizes how Kino becomes greedy when he finds the pearl In the surface of the great pearl he could see dreams formp11 Kino began to see himself superior to others now that he had the pearl The books use of music is also symbolic it most often suggests evil The music had gone out of Kinos head but now thinly slowly the melody of the morning the music of the evil of the enemy sounded but it was faint and weakp27 The music represents Kino feeling the evil emerging around him Kino had found the pearl of the worldp1 Kino thinks that the pearl will provide faith peace and protection but instead he gets cheated and shattered by the pearl All three of these examples show how the pearl is a symbol of evil these changes can also be seen in the plot of the novel The plot is instrumental in finding the theme of The Pearl because it supports how Kino becomes miserable and furious Kino was already making a hard skin for himself against the worldp29 He is already getting defensive about his future Hush do not speak anymorep39 Kino was cruel to his wife after he found the pearl He used
