The Twenty-Fifth Amendment The twenty-fifth amendment which states that the Vice President replaces the President in case of death and replacements in case of future deaths or disabling illnesses progresses onward in rank seems like common sense to most people This amendment is obviously necessary to protect us from confusion and chaos if a tragedy occurs Even before the amendment was ratified on February 10 1967 it had already been unconsciously invoked seven times not always in the appointment of a President The twenty-fifth amendment has unofficially been present throughout all of American history For example it was presumed in Garfields sudden death and when Wilson was incapacitated for the last eighteen months of his term The amendments origin officially began in 1947 when congress passed the Presidential Succession Act which simply put into writing the unseen force of the succession clause The need to officially legislate succession originates in post WWII culture At the time it was a paranoid concern that our leaders could be killed and the communists would seize our government in such a moment of weakness The Succession Act and eventually the amendment was enacted as a safeguard to keep our nation running after such a tragic event The act saw its first implementation with the death of John F Kennedy in 1963 resulting in Lyndon Johnsons appointment to the presidency After the Succession Act was ratified into our constitution in 1967 it was used in multiple instances throughout the 1970s The amendment resulted in succession of government officials to the Presidency and Vice Presidency by those who had never faced the voters to gain their position The amendment was first used when Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned on October 10 1973 and President Nixon nominated Gerald Ford to replace him The house and senate confirmed the nominations and Ford took his oath on December 6 1973 Fords promotion to the Vice Presidency went extremely
