The call goes out at one AM Hillsville fire Laurel Fork fire please respond to a flu fire at 1122 Sunflower Rd Meadows of Dan VA 24120 said dispatch Within five minutes the first responder from Laurel Fork Matt Hallond shows up on scene asking Please evacuate the house and get back as far as you can so the occupants leave the house and start to clean an area around the house to help the firemen get in and out of the burning house About five minutes later the first fire engine shows up from Laurel Fork and starts unloading people and equipment to start fighting the fire After about twenty five minutes the first Hillsville fire engine shows up and does the same as Laurel Forks but by then Laurel Fork had already put the fire out All that was needed now was cleaning up That night changed my whole families look on fire departments One may notice the differences in the two fire departments are there ISO rating the amount of people on their department and their equipment As many who know and have experienced a house fire having a capable fire department can be the difference between a still livable house and a total loss Fire departments are rated by an ISO rating This rating shows how well their department is trained how many show up how much water can be brought to the scene and their response time to a fire alarm or a call The ISO rating ranges from a one to a ten one being the best and a 9 being satisfactory and a ten as unprotected for the area the department covers Laurel Fork has an eight which may sound bad but it doesnt really show their effectiveness when fighting a fire Whereas Hillsville has a six as their ISO rating The main reason is because they have a higher number of people working in
