As the passionate events of the piece Othello the Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare continually build up it is important to take a look at the role of the women Desdemona and Emilia who take a backseat-ride the entire play When we examine their relationships and roles and how the male characters affect these we can conclude that while Desdemona and Emilia have the potential to influence the plot the mens behavior severely diminishes this potential In fact the womens very innocence is what leads to their undoing While looking at the relationship between the two major women in the play Desdemona and Emilia it is clear that they have a stronger relationship with each other more than a relationship they may have with any of the men At the end of the play we see how close Emilia was with Desdemona as Emilia refers to her as her mistress 53line and pleads Desdemonas innocence Actsceneline 876-880 This subtle indication of a strong personal relationship shows that Emilia had a stronger connection with Desdemona then she had for her own husband Another indication that Desdemona and Emilias friendship was strong was when Emilia says to Othello that she is with Desdemona almost constantly when he is asking about Cassio This connection they had with each other serves as evidence that the Emilia was in a way out of the loop when it came to the main conflicts of her husband in the play It becomes a clear indication that her relationship with her husband was somewhat replaced with a stronger relationship with Desdemona as she remained oblivious to what Iagos intentions were until Desdemona was already dead 879 On the other hand while looking at Desdemonas relationship with Othello a similar tendency is found Yes they are newlyweds and probably love each other more than anything but there seems to be a lack of communication which eventually leads to a lack
