Louis XIV one of the best known French kings came to power when he was only four years old Uncared for the latter part of his childhood the country started to fall because there was no one to rule it properly The way Louis would rule the country and treat the French people was greatly shaped by the French Civil War The Parisian Parliaments decision to rise against the crown would have Louis running for the next five years He suffered fear cold hunger and other spirit-breaking events This boy would never forgive Paris the nobles or the common people for what they did In 1653 a French Cardinal Jules Mazarin was able to end the rebellion He began to oversee and assist Louis with the day to day decisions he had to make as king Even though he was now of age the Cardinal remained the dominant authority in French Politics During Frances war with Spain Louis served in the army The hardest thing for him to do was to give up his love for Mazarins niece and turn to politics So in 1660 he married the daughter of the king of Spain to bring peace between the countries Thus giving him more time to spend with Mazarins niece who would become one in a long line of Mistresses On March 9 1661 Mazarin died Only a day after that Louis claimed supreme authority in France Never had a Frech noble done this since Henry IV The new king saw himself as a representative of God and therefore infallible For the next several years he would oversee road building court decorum defense and disputes within the church Louis had a wide range of supporters Among these were several individuals Writers such as Moliere were given orders to glorify the King Monuments were built and seemed to be erected overnight all around the area of Paris The most elaborate of these monuments
