In late 1800s few audiences had heard of or experienced such a thing called a saxophone Most people probably thought it was a trumpet or a clarinet-like instrument that was made out of brass Saxophone instrument was very new and fascinating to most people It produced unusual sound that the most people could not describe it or what to call it yet characterized like a human voice During the late Romantic period Philip Sousa was one of the most important composers conductors and entrepreneurs in the United States that led the saxophone to be heard a lot in the concert halls ceremonies and parades He was the leading conductor who uplifted the military style of music and people recognized him as King of March At that time why did Sousa incorporate saxophones to promote his band and how did the multiple soloists perform with his band traveling all over the world This research paper will demonstrate that saxophonists played an important role as solo performers during Sousas concerts It will also determine the specific activities of the soloists during the time they performed with Sousa and expose a body of repertoire performed by these individuals This paper is primarily an attempt to facilitate the inclusion of Sousas saxophonists into the complete and on-going history regarding the saxophones short but very interesting life of saxophonistsJohn Philip Sousa was one of the most valuable conductors and entertainers in the United States from 1892 until his death in 1932 He created his own band and performed over 15200 concerts during the course of his lifetime It was completely self-financing and traveled by rail and ships Sousas band was ranging from 43 to 73 musicians including 3 to 5 saxophonists Sousa believed that an organized band could produce good quality music directly to the people often performing in two towns per day and make profitable income Sousa believed that soloists were an important element in an entertaining musical program
