By the 1944 the Germans were taking over cities like they are taking candy from baby Any offensive that came against them they destroyed Germany was building its country in size and it could make allies lose So The Allies needed to stop Germans fast They decided the only way to successfully conquer the Germans was to make a mass invasion across the English Channel Bernard Law Montgomery was appointed the Allied invasion commander He proposed that the invasion be scattered over 5 areas by different countries The British would control two beaches the Americans two beaches and Canada one beach The beaches were code named Utah Omaha Gold Juno and Sword And they gave code name to this operation the Operation overlord Operation began and the Allies started landing on June 6 1944 at five beaches in the Normandy area Allied planes pounded the Nazi defenders and dropped thousands of paratroopers behind German lines the night before the seaborne landings The invasion force included 7000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195000 naval personnel from eight allied countries Almost 133000 troops from Britain Canada and the United States landed on Normandy shores on D-Day - Importance in World War II - D-day was the biggest single multi-service operation in the history of warfare Its commemoration deserves our full support D-day is historically significant because it lead to the defeat of German forces that occupied France The sacrifices made by the families and communities on the home front were the critical importance and significance of D-Day The allies defeated Germans very badly in this invasion By this invasion Germany lost its many soldiers and made it weak The Germany became so weak that now it was very easy for allies to defeat the Germans in World War II So the D-Day was one significant link for allies to push Germans back and win in the war - D-Day
