Using the second paragraph to provide an overview of the series is a good idea, but it's rather long compared to the other discussions. Is each point directly relevant to the thesis (for example, the discussion about the first book's journey to publication)? The third paragraph is overly dependent on plot detail--use the later, more efficient body paragraphs to think about streamlining this third paragraph. As a final note on argumentation, the conclusion doesn't yet present a clear argument about the importance of these observations. In particular, the reader will wonder the importance of the first and last book of the series sharing these elements and themes--what is the effect of this consistency? You mentioned reader expectation as well as the critique of the series getting darker--these may be elements to consider in creating an original thesis that moves this paper beyond a series of observations that could otherwise be produced by analyzing just one of the books.
