The Macmillan dictionary for students defines stranger as 1 Person with whom one is not acquainted or familiar 2 Foreigner outsider or newcomer 3 One who is ignorant of unacquainted with or unaccustomed to something specified In the book The Stranger by Albert Camus these three definitions apply to the protagonist Meursault Meursault is portrayed as aloof detached and unemotional He does not think about events and their consequences He also fails to express any emotion in his relationships with his friends After Meursaults mothers death he sheds no tears He shows limited emotions to his girlfriend Marie and shows no remorse for killing the Arab His reactions to life and to people distance him from his emotions whether they are positive or negative thus he is called by the books title the stranger While this may seem to be a negative aspect of a man there are still people that want to be friends with Meursault He seems content to be indifferentMeursault rarely shows any feeling when in situations which would for most people elicit strong emotions Throughout the vigil watching over his mothers dead body and at her funeral he never cries He is further depicted enjoying a cup of coffee with milk during the vigil and having a smoke with a caretaker at the nursing home in which his mother died The following day after his mothers funeral he goes to the beach and meets a former colleague named Marie Cardona They swim go to a movie and then spend the night together Later in their relationship Marie asks Meursault if he wants to marry her He responds that it doesnt matter to him and if she wants to get married he would agree She then asks him if he loves her To that question he responds that he probably doesnt and explains that marriage really isnt such a serious thing and doesnt require love This reaction is fairly typical of Meursault
