The Struggle Between The human experience is filled with a constant struggle or more correctly the human experience is a constant struggle A battle between doing what one ought and what one desires often two very different stations and then again often parallel visions Should one travel and experience art and culture and live the adventurous life or should one settle down with spouse and children a mortgage and a dreaded steady job Each decision we face has innumerable possible choices with exponentially more possible outcomes as a result of the original decision Each choice leads to a plethora of new choices Finding ourselves somewhere down the road of our historical choices we often ask the age-old question of what if Is happiness or life a destination or a journey as is so often stated Once some measure of joy or contentment is attained can it be maintained Or are we doomed to constant entropy or toil to maintain our life station or watch it crumble In Fords The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Ransom Stoddard James Stewart finds himself recently graduated from law school A young man with a seemingly bright future intent on making his place in the world armed with his law books and his law school attitude He is schooled in legalities but an infant in the ways of the American west Tom Doniphon John Wayne is the polar opposite to Ranse Stoddard He is a rough and tumble hard living veteran of life in the dusty west Every bit of eastern refinement in Stoddard is echoed in opposite with Doniphons tough as leather persona Stoddard is met with opposition early in the film when he attempts to defend a lady when the stagecoach they share is ambushed by a group of bandits led by the infamous Liberty Valance Liberty represents the animalistic side of the cowboy legend his passions are left unbridled free to do as
