There has been a lot of confusion and myths that surrounds the subculture of transvestitism This confusion and stigma comes from the fact that it has received bad press and attracted an unsympathetic social reaction in the western part of the world It has led transvestites to crawl away from society into the darkness and depths of secrecy Cross-dressing another term for transvestitism is defined as a man with a compulsion to dress like or otherwise personify a woman while still accepting the male identity A typical transvestite would be a man who appears to abide by normal male gender roles when he is not cross-dressing He is not likely to be a homosexual Transvestitism should not be confused with transsexuals The difference between transsexuals and transvestites is that the typical male transsexual will not identify in any way with his gender role as a male He would probably believe that he is a woman trapped in a mans body Transvestitism happens in societies that separate elements of human experience into female male These societies have norms which indicate that women do one thing and men another women can feel one way and a man must feel this other way Gender role is the public face of personal gender identity Everything that we do or say indicates to others to what degree we are male or female There is obviously an accepted gender role in every society and men particularly learn their acceptable gender roles and internalize them from their earliest years There are other ideas about the existence and practice of transvestitism For instance there are a few inquisitive features to be considered when we examine cross-dressing For one thing it is mainly a male activity Probing deeper we can ask ourselves if this is because women more than men have the freedom of expression They can express a certain amount of masculinity with more ease than men can be feminine Women
