The symptoms of ADD In children the three major symptoms are hyperactivity impulsiveness and inattentiveness In the American Psychiatric Associations diagnostic manual the disorder is divided into three classes depending on whether it involves all three symptoms the vast majority of cases the first two only or mainly the third relatively uncommon Hyperactivity is usually the first symptom to be noticed since it is obvious at an age when not much sustained attention or impulse control is expected These children may be difficult to hold and soothe even as infants They run almost as soon as they can walk climb into medicine cabinets and rush into traffic Later when required to remain still as in a classroom they fidget and squirm tap their feet shake their legs and jump up from their desks Most of these children are also impulsive They cannot wait their turn or think before acting In conversation they interrupt talk too much too loud and too fast and blurt out whatever comes to mind They pester parents teachers and other children They are clumsy and accident-prone When not in motion or acting on impulse children with ADD are often distracted and daydreaming They are never on time and give the impression of paying little attention to what others say and do Sustained mental effort of any kind is difficult for them They ignore homework abandon unfinished projects make careless mistakes repeatedly and switch haphazardly between activities Children with ADD can make life difficult for themselves and everyone around them They seem to be deliberately ignoring or flouting anyone elses wants and needs They create chaos in classrooms and turn family homes into war zones Other children often find them obnoxious and try to avoid them Exasperated parents and teachers may regard them as irresponsible lazy and arrogant Parents are exhausted in caring for them and find they have little time for each other or for anything else As
