Sneezing coughing fevers body aches fatigue these are all symptoms of a disease that strikes every single year without fail Many will just ignore the symptoms and go on with their everyday life However what they do not know is that this simple itch in the throat runny nose or a temperature can very much be fatal While many may not think of it as much of a pandemic the flu has wrecked havoc across the world in many different forms over the years This paper will focus on what the flu is what causes it treatments and the major flu pandemics that swept the world over the yearsAccording to John Quarles influenza otherwise known as the flu is a viral infection of the respiratory system Quarles Daniel Perez Associate Professor of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland stated that the flu virus is fairly contagious as it can be spread through the air Once the virus is inside the body it infects the cells of the upper air passages From then on the infected cells starts producing more viruses to infect other healthy cells thus spreading the disease further in the body At this point the infected person can spread the disease by expelling the virus through the air through actions such as coughing and sneezing Others may be contaminated by breathing in the virus or touching something that has the virus on it and coming in contact with their mouth or nose Perez However Barrett and Frey acknowledge that the victim does not begin feeling the symptoms of influenza until one to four days after the actual infection The symptoms will then lead to complications due to the fact that the weakened immune system can no longer protect the body as well as before Barrett Quarles also noted that unlike most other respiratory diseases there is a
