Franklin Delano Roosevelt the 32nd president of The United States of America once said Men are not prisoners of fate but only prisoners of their own minds This indicates that fate does not control anyones life ones life is controlled by individual decisions However the Elizabethans believed the opposite that God had already planned out their lives and everything that happened was fate This is shown in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet where two star-crossed lovers are destined to be together however they are also meant to be separated Romeo and Juliet come across obstacles so that they can be together in peace For the Elizabethans fate is supposedly the only thing that has influence on their lives However in todays society people believe that fate is a small factor of the outcome for lives Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy that occurs as a direct result of the characters thoughts actions and words as opposed to a decision of fateThe characters thoughts are a great influence on the characters decisions which turn into actions When Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry Juliet and him the Friar agrees to do it Considering that it might result in the ancient grudge between the two families Capulets and Montagues Friar Lawrence said to Romeo after accepting to marry them For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to pure love IIIII91-92 This is not a factor of fates cards making Romeo and Juliet get married only a decision of Friar and how he wants the two families to have peace In addition another thought is when Romeo and Juliet first meet at Capulets party and it is love at first sight Romeo states about his love for Juliet Did my heart love till now forswear it sight For I neer saw true beauty until this night IV51-52 This indicates that love at first sight is a sign of fate for them however
