Can one find happiness in a solution of death Throughout two poems this question is pondered The solution of death not only pertains to the ending of ones physical life but that if their emotional being Dorothy Parkers poems Resume and Symptom Recital express these themes through its words The first theme death is not always a solution is evident in both poems Another theme that is apparent in Parkers two poems is that happiness is rarely found in ones life These two poems include how to kill ones self and why one should not perform this act and also why one would deicide to end their life In Resume the speaker is listing ways of how to end ones life Happiness in this particular persons life is not found and the person is trying to decide what would be the most effortless and easiest way to terminate their life The speaker proceeds to list each possibility Watching the blood run down ones arm would be torture just the fact of knowing that one could stop it would cause much turmoil in ones thinking process Razors pain you slitting ones wrists would cause too much discomfort 1 Not only would the person have to watch themselves die they would feel the life draining from their body Swimming out into the ocean or lake would take some effort The person would be surrounded by water and that last breath of water would be hard to swallow Barton 2 Drowning would result in the feeling of being cold and wet rivers are damp2 One that is trying to commit suicide is looking for comfort The speaker speaks of another method where one would use acid After the person successfully takes their life there would be discoloration from the solution they applied Also if the person were to survive they would have to live with the scars caused by the
