Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games published in 2008 is a fast paced thrilling and adventurous novel exuding a storyline that captures the readers attention Telling a story of a post-apocalyptic United States where in a dystopian future the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the Capitol Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games which is televised throughout Panem The 24 participants aged between 12 and 18 are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch When 16-year-old Katnisss younger sister Prim is selected as District 12s female tribute Katniss volunteers to take her place She and her male counterpart Peeta are pitted against bigger stronger representatives some of whom have trained for the Hunger Games their whole livesThroughout the novel The Hunger Games Katniss and Peeta retain their humanity in contrast to other characters They show this by their actions in and out of the arena their beliefs and their responses to unjust circumstances Throughout the novel The Hunger Games Katniss and Peeta retain their humanity in contrast to other characters by their actions in and out of the arena During the novel both Katniss and Peeta carry out actions which show their humanity One of the ways this can be shown is at the beginning of the novel when the reader is introduced to the deteriorated dilapidated and poverty-stricken District 12 where Katniss and Peeta both live Katniss along with her younger sister Primrose and her mother are living in extreme poverty after her father is killed in a mining accident They are left starving and desperate for any small piece of food they can acquire After a day of unsuccessful hunting Katniss rests under a tree while waiting for the rain to clear and then Peeta appears out of the bakery with two burnt loaves of bread The boy took
