Salem was a normal town until it was destroyed by the beliefs that people in the town were witches The crucible by Arthur Miller is about the witchcraft outbreak in Salem in 1692 The young girls lie to the court and make false accusations of people and their association with the devil The word witchcraft is a scare to the citizens People are suddenly turning on one another and accusations of witchery quickly spread What was once a quite peaceful community turned chaotic with fright and everyone feared for their lives The central theme in the play is hysteriaThe first example for hysteria in the play was caused by the girls in the town and their unpredicted behavior Abigail Williams is the leader of the girls in the town She is accusing people of having connections with the devil and she is influencing the other girls to join in and accuse innocent towns people In the play this is the first example of assumptions being made by Abigail I want to open myself I want the light of God I want the sweet love of Jesus I danced for the Devil I saw him I wrote in his book I go back to Jesus I kiss His handI saw Sarah Good Bettys hands appear above headboard raised toward the heaven with the Devil I saw Good Osburn with the devil I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil As she is speaking Betty picks it up as a chant Act one This is really just the beginning of the Salem witch trials and many other allegations are made after this first incident The introduction of the word witchcraft in the town cause a lot of fear among the towns people and it sparked many fearful events for the people living in Salem The puritan religion is a very strict Christian based following of the bible meaning any mention of the devil would cause concern for people
